Charcoal (or vegetable carbon) is a natural fuel derived from the carbonization process of wood. The transformation of wood into charcoal occurs through a complex combustion system. In the past, this process took place in so-called “charcoal kilns,” while today the combustion happens at high temperatures with the presence of a small amount of oxygen, inside large concrete and steel silos that prevent the release of harmful gases resulting from this procedure. The high temperatures to which the wood is subjected, exceeding 300°C, make the resulting compound a material with a very high carbon content.
